The Sophomore Set-up

As we brave the winter frost I'm taking on the additional challenge of preparing my new album. It is an undertaking I believe I'm handling gracefully. The plan is to have the first single drop shortly, a second single by late spring and a full album for your listening pleasure by late summer. Let's hope everything goes according to plan. I Can’t Wait ‘Til February!

I know this blog is supposed to be about me and my music, but I’m having a moment.

I love music and admire many artists, but Sade, she does something special for me. Yes, she’s beautiful, but it’s that sound, them lyrics, that voice and that groove that puts me in a zone! I’m inspired by her ability to stay true to the sound and style she believes in regardless of what the industry dictates. That’s where I live too.

Something about Sade makes me go crazy; and I will be in a music store somewhere on February 8th dropping my coins and picking up my muse.

Reminisce, Right Now, ‘Round The Corner

It’s November 4th and I want to reminisce…..A year ago today I was far away, but my home town was representin’.

It’s been one week since my birthday and almost three months since my return to New York City, and Empire State of Mind pretty much sums up how I’m biting the apple.

“In New York/Concrete jungle where dreams are made of/There’s nothing you can’t do” Lots of writing in solitude and lots of time in the studio……On my birthday, before a wonderful dinner with my wife Shevon (her treat), I was presented the opportunity to write with Roxanne Seeman who, like me has written for Earth, Wind & Fire, as well as penned songs for Barbra Streisand, The Jacksons, Bette Midler and many artists overseas. You never know whom you’re touching with your music. I just found out from a DJ that I have a huge following in the NY Russian community. According to her I’m a legend. I’ll take that.

“Now you’re in New York” Lots of brainstorming with management….The concept for album 2 is fully fleshed. Promotion and publicity are being built and photos must be taken along with the other stuff artists are not usually crazy about.

“These streets will make you feel brand new/Big lights will inspire you……” Keeping the social network alive and building on web presence……Recently rewarded for holding it down in the Top 100 at Ourstage.com; and four songs in regular rotation on Jango.com. Also keeping the social life alive. Last Sunday, a semi-surprise party hosted by my wife gave me the opportunity to spend some quality time with close friends in the very NYC setting of the Dream Hotel.

2010 Is Almost Upon Us……..It’s scary and there’s a lot on my plate. But this is New York and I can get it done. Be on the lookout for the first single to drop at the top of the second quarter…..that’s April.

I’m in deep chill mode, but I can still hear……and I hear Toni Braxton is about to hit us up in February with “Pulse” her first album on the Atlantic label. So with all the leaking going on, you know a brother’s ears opened all the way up when I heard the single “I Hate Love”. While her song is good for a slow grind, and my “Hate To Love You” is a head bobbing, finger snapper, we are definitely on the same page with the storyline. J. Phoenix: Hate to love you, but I do/Toni: I hate myself for the way I feel about you. Damn, somebody needs to remix that!

Word is Toni's album might include some of the leaked songs, so I’m hoping we might get a little side-by-side airplay. Try it at home and see what you think. For “Hate To Love You” click on the player at right.

Jeans & J. Phoenix: Live In Atlanta

It feels good to be home………..it felt good to be part of Born To Play, Gap’s celebration of 40 years of heritage in jeans and music, “the largest-ever simultaneous live acoustic music event” hosted by Gap, and It felt great performing for my fans with two of Atlanta’s premiere musicians.

I like the unusual……….and I think I’ve caught a lil in-store fever. There is something organic about singing amidst the shopping experience. During a time when we are all watching our coins, it feels right to get some entertainment in the process. The feeling is right up there with ‘free sample’.

Spotlight………I gotta shine some light on my girl Maria, who did a fantastic job hooking up the merch table, and my girl Kendra, who along with her two beautiful daughters took an hour and a half drive, in Atlanta traffic, to come out and support me. I also want to give a shout out to Avenue at Webb Gin Gap store managers, Jeremy and Lelund, who were instrumental in the success of my performance.

I’m stealing a lil vacation time, and I’ll see you in a minute.

Singing On The East Coast For Gap's 40th Anniversary Celebration

After a two-year tour in Europe, North Africa, the Caribbean and Alaska, I'm finally going to perform down in this part of the U.S. during the "largest-ever simultaneous live acoustic music event," hosted by the Gap. In case you haven't heard, the Gap is celebrating 40 years of heritage in jeans and music.

All of you in the ATL grab up your family, friends and coworkers and come on out for this in-store. I'll be performing an intimate acoustic set of select songs from my debut album, Masterpiece, as well as hits I've written for other artists, and a few surprises. I'll also be speaking with fans and autographing copies of Masterpiece.

Big Good News

I've won honorable mention for “For The People” and two unrecorded songs, “Crossroads” and “Light In The Dark,” in the 16^th Billboard World Song Contest.

Sharing the honors with me for “Light In The Dark,” which the judges describe as “a great track with a very pleasant soundscape,” is Gary Haase, my long-time collaborator and executive producer of Masterpiece, known for his work with such artists as Celine Dion, Chaka Khan, Randy Brecker and Michael Bolton. The judges also say the song as has “lot’s of potential for wide and great success.” Let's believe they're right. The Heatmakerz, the phenomenal Hip-Hop production team known for their work with Cannibus Cam’ron, Lil Flip, and Lil Wayne, share honors on “Crossroads” described by the judges as having an “excellent vocal delivery and a very nice arrangement and progression,” and “For The People,” the high-spirited, infectious song called “a winner and real crowd pleaser with good melodies and a great message” by the A&R team at Taximusic.com.

As I said two days ago, the reminders are precious. I honor them each time they show up. A word to the songwriters out there: Stay focused and stay with your music. There are those who appreciate what you do.

Precious Reminders

Coincidence. I Don’t Believe In It............But I do believe in destiny, and a few days ago I was destined to meet the reminder that my music is authentic. I refer to it as such because it is not tied to a moment in time, but to all times. Anyway, after a well-received performance, I decided to do a little hanging with some musicians. After a few minutes of kickin’ around general conversation the drummer starts talking about 2Pac and that his favorite song of all time is Thugz Mansion. When I told them I co-wrote that one the place went crazy. Between the “get the f@#k outta heres,” and “that song is hot,” came “I have that on my iPod. Is that you in the video?” Yes it is. The conversation continues and someone says his favorite R&B song is by this artist named Joe. So I ask what’s the name of the song? He says All That I Am. In my head I'm saying all right God you got my attention again. I fess up and tell them I wrote that one too. I was not prepared for his response. “Wow, that’s great song. I thought Babyface wrote it until I looked at the credits.” You know I ain’t mad. That’s some great company to be in. So now they all want me to listen to either their music or their friends music. I will do what I can.

Connecting…….That’s my intention when I write. Every now and then someone comes along to let me know I’m meeting my goal. Recently, while signing autographs after a performance, everyone told me they bought the CD because they found a connection to Masterpiece. I’m inspired.

A Few Words About Michael

Shocked!........That pretty much sums it up. Over the past week, like most, I’ve been thinking about the music; and I’ve also been giving a lot of thought to the allegations, both old and new, and wishing he had the opportunity to vindicate himself. Like the rest of us, Michael was flawed….but his talent was perfect.

I’m joining the throngs of performers who have talked for seven days about Micheal’s influence on their careers. I’ll admit it, I did a few spins and a moonwalk or two when no one was looking, but, it has always been Michael’s connection to the world through his music that moves me most, followed by his kick-ass performances. There’s no doubt that Michael clearly understood the meaning of entertainment. In this department, I believe he was untouchable.

Now you know I have a Michael Jackson story……A while back a mutual friend played Ghetto Love Song, for him, and his immediate response was “great voice ...great song....who is this?” While I never got the chance to write with him, I’m holding on to the fact that the best on the planet said I had a great voice and I wrote a great song.

My MJ Soundtrack……….On the performance side, singing She’s Out Of My Life got me into a major talent show back in the day. On the listening and looking side, it’s a triple play with Thriller as favorite song, video and album. Coming in close for favorite song is Man In The Mirror, and there's a host of others too numerous to mention. It’s been a blessing to experience his genius, and I hope he’s found his peace.

More Old School/New School on the Alaska Run

From the Caribbean to the Land of the Midnight Sun…….So yeah, I went from the heat of the Caribbean and Central America this winter to the coolness of Alaska this Spring. I ain’t feelin’ the weather right now, but I’m lovin’ the opportunity. There’s not a whole lot I like to do here, so I’ve been spending more time on new music. Yes, I promise you something for 2010. Jelani, my manager who despises the cold, flew over and brought along a truck load of inspiration. After some of our late-night recording sessions and brainstorming, I’m ready to hit the ground running when I return to the New York this summer….after a much needed vacation, of course. Do you realize I’ve been on tour for almost two years?

Is this a sign?…....This tour has taken on an interesting twist that speaks to what music reviewers call my “old school meets new school vibe.” I keep meeting older artists with long careers, who have, at some point, been connected to Vegas. I hope it’s a sign ‘cause I could use one of those Celine Dion-type runs in Sin City. Recently, vocalist and all-around entertainer, Hal Frazier caught one of my performances. He had some great things to say and a lot of advice. I listened. Hal is a dynamic vocalist whose career was launched in the mid-60s and included appearances on every major late-night, talk and variety show from the Tonight Show with Johnny Carson, to the Ed Sullivan Show, from The Merv Griffin Show to The Flip Wilson Show. In Vegas he’s played Caesar’s Palace, the Sands, and Harrah’s. He toured with comedian Don Rickles and was once managed by actor/comedian Don Adams. Now in his 70s, Hal still rocks the house. We had lunch and I took the opportunity to learn as much as possible. It’s not often this amount of wisdom walks right up to you.

An Encore Performance & A Legend Moment

Not Bragging. Just Stating The Facts…….Word got around fast about the hotness of the headline show I told you about last week. So, we have been asked to do an encore performance. I’ll have some video for you from the first show in a minute; and you can also expect something to follow from the second show. Oh, by the way, we made the front page of the paper.

You Never Know……Ain’t that what the grown folks use to say? Looks like they were right. While I was doing all that wailing, someone was watching. It turned out to be another headliner, legendary Rat Pack era comedian Marty Allen. If you watched television or traveled to Las Vegas during the last 4 decades of the 1900s, then you’ve seen Marty Allen. He’s in his 80s now and still performing, along with his wife, vocalist Karon Kate Blackwell. After talking about how much they enjoyed the show, he told me I reminded him of a singer he often went to see back in the day. I asked who, he said, “Sam Cooke.” I’ve heard that comparison more than a few times, and I like it. Sidebar: I’m going to have to be Sam Cooke for the biopic. You know I’ll put the smackdown on “A Change is Gonnna Come,” and “Bring It On Home To Me.” Somebody call my manager and hook me up……..Anyway, Mr. Allen went on to tell me how Nat King Cole helped his career, about his experiences with the Beatles, Aretha Franklin and a host of others. We had a cool old school/new school moment.

Gold Overseas, Headlining, and a Mega Yacht

Gone Gold……Bling Bling! My song “Real Man” written with songwriter/vocalist/producer, Andy Roda, and recorded by Filipino superstar Vina Morales is on the ASAP Supah Dance album…….and the album has gone gold in the Philippines. Here’s some encouragement for all you songwriters out there: Stay faithful and stay on your grind. We wrote this song several years ago. It was slated for an album that didn’t happen and now it’s on a gold record. I keep telling ‘em my music is timeless.

Sailing & Singing….…The big ships have been my life for a minute, and things are blowin’ up. Last week I, and that singing diva Shevon, debuted as a headline act. For 45 minutes we put it on them with a roster of classics which included “At Last,” River Deep,” “Try a Little Tenderness,” and “Lets Stay Together.” The audience loved it. Speaking of big ships, recently while in Barbados all six feet and 2 inches of me was dwarfed by the magnitude of the Maltese Falcon, the mega yacht owned by Tom Perkins and said to be one of the largest privately-owned sailing yachts in the world. Now what I really need is for ya’ll to buy some more CDs so I can get me one of these. Mothers Day is coming up. How about serenading momma with Masterpiece?

The Music…….Recently finished a song for a jazz mega star. I’ll keep you posted. Masterpiece is still selling on the Internet with the bulk of sales happening at iTunes U.S. and UK. J. Phoenix Picks Up White Woman & Channels Elvis in the Caribbean

Just Kidding…It’s been a minute so I thought I’d make renewing our conversation a little provocative. Recently I ran into Etta May, winner of the prestigious American Comedy Awards “Stand-Up Comic of the Year.” You’ve probably seen her on Oprah, Comic Strip Live, MTV, or “CBS Sunday Morning.” We had dinner and talked about how much I like her comedy and how much she likes my singing.

I also had the pleasure of hanging out and talking music business with Kent Hernandez who manages Matthew Santos, the young, Grammy-nominated singer/songwriter known for his work on Lupe Fiasco’s “Superstar” and additional tracks on “The Cool.” Keep your eye on this young man, he has skills.

Last we talked I was doing the singing thing in Europe. At the end of ’08 I hit New York for a minute, spent some time in North Carolina and Houston, and now I'm doing my thing in the Caribbean for a few months…..notice the tan?

While in New York I caught up with well-known music industry maven turned author, Jacqueline Rhinehart for one of the signing events for her new book My Organic Soul: From Plato to Creflo, Emerson to MLK, Jesus to Jay-Z. Check it out. It's awesome.

The Music……….I’m workin’ on it. On the road, Pro Tools has become my new best friend. I’m planning to have something new and hot for ya’ll in 2010.

The Stage..…….You would never believe this if you didn’t hear it from me. But yes, I did it, donned a little gold lame and wailed on Elvis’ “Little Less Conversation,” with Jennifer (left) and Brandi doing a lil something on the side. Competition is tough out here, so a brother’s got to be versatile.

The Future…OK, so I didn’t follow tradition. What else is new? I released an album, did two performances and left the country. But now, I’m geared up to do some serious live performances on U.S. soil when I return. So, if you’d like to see me in your city stop by Eventful and make your demand known. I definitely want to hit some college campuses, so let me know what spots you think are the hottest. For you social networkers, feel free to grab the demand widget and place it on your pages. I guess by now you've heard about my Soul Power! campaign. If you’ve been reading the papers or watching TV, you know that right now it’s all about the love and people pulling together. So, in keeping with that theme, I’m asking all of my fans to join me in Soul Power!, my music program empowerment campaign.

With all the talk about cutting back and buckling down, it’s obvious that special programs will take a hard hit. I want my fans to join me in showing our power and empowering others. Another Great Review

"Nowadays, there is something commendable to be said about R&B that doesn't feature lyrics dripping with sex and vulgarities. Masterpiece is a gem in the sense that it brings back the old school vibe of our culture's Motown days while still maintaining a firm foothold in the present.

"Sweet sweet freedom/ Everybody's on the same road/ No matter what your color/ Rich or poor…" goes the lulling chorus of "Sweet Freedom," a fitting representative for the tone that is pertinent throughout J. Phoenix's debut effort. With a title like "Money Don't Mean a Thing," another of the album's tracks could have easily been a forgettable filler piece, but J. Phoenix's smooth, sultry vocals give it the credibility it deserves. Not one syllable is neglected; nor is any sentiment understated. J. Phoenix sings with such passion and conviction that it would be difficult not to be transported.

Masterpiece isn't revolutionary in its theme, so don't invest in it if you're more into hip, progressive music. However, the album exudes talent, and it is with much hope that J. Phoenix will repave the forgotten path for other R&B artists to regard their craft with the care that he has."

One Year Later..…This month marks one year since Masterpiece was given to the ears of the world. It’s hard to believe so much time has passed, but when I stand still and look at the blessings it becomes real. As of this writing I have more than a quarter million online fans in the US, Asia, Canada and Europe. Two songs from the album have charted on some widely viewed websites, and I’ve been maintaining Top 40 status on others. “For The People” is being played in clubs, several songs are enjoying internet radio play and others are getting significant airplay in Europe. Two songs from the album and four you haven’t heard are being strongly considered for recording by other artists and film television and advertising projects….and both the album and individual songs have received great reviews. It’s been a wonderful year, and I’m glad you’ve been a part of it.

A&Rs, DJs and The Dancefloor

The A&Rs Get Me…….I’m just not sure they know it. Let me share a lil sumpin’ with you. Like most songwriters I get my share of passes; and the reasons vary. In the past it’s been the artist is not going in this direction, we’re looking for something a little more uptempo, or we’re looking for something with more hook and less message.

But lately I’ve been hearing that my songs don’t sound like everything else on the radio; and that my songs are a perfect fit for film, television and advertising. This is where I say, “you do get me.” True, I don’t sing like everyone else on the radio. I have a style of my own; and, like film and television, my songwriting is about storytelling, not just coming up with a hook to keep the club bouncing.

Throughout my career I’ve admired and been influenced by songwriters whose lyrics are still relevant today (think Marvin Gaye, Curtis Mayfield, Smokey Robinson, Bill Withers) and sound damn good on the radio today too. The same goes for singers whose soulful delivery brought us to our feet (James Brown, Barry White, Al Green and Isaac Hayes) and balladeers who just sang, sang, sang (Peabo Bryson, James Ingram, Jeffrey Osborne and Luther Vandross, one of my mentors who sold us a whole of products through his voice in advertising).

Then, as we came upon the end of the 20^th century, we all got excited the first time we heard D’Angelo, Maxwell and Musiq Soulchild, because they didn’t sound like everyone else on the radio. So right about now I’m thinkin’ different was always good and it still is. Whatchoothink?

Oh, by the way, has anyone noticed that some songs played on the radio are the same or similar in title and storyline as three of the songs on MASTERPIECE?: “Hate That I Love You” (Rihanna/Ne-Yo), “Just Like You” (Keyshia Cole) and “Money’ Don’t Mean A Thing” (Dwele’s last album)

What’s Up With Masterpiece…….DJs are felling "For The People" and people are lovin’ it on the dance floor in Brooklyn, on Long island and in New Jersey, message and all. A record pool in the Midwest just put in a request so I’ll let you know how it goes in that part of the country…….Airplay is also happening on Internet stations.

A MASTER & A MASTERPIECE

I Was Hyped…….and ready to tell you all about the great review Masterpiece received, when I learned of Isaac Hayes’ death. So we’ll get to the review later. Obviously I was nowhere to be found when Hot Buttered Soul hit the streets; but when singing found me, I found the album and was blown away. While the cover was striking and impressive, it was Isaac's music and arrangements that held my attention most and led me to keep my ears tuned to his body of work. His contribution to soul music is huge. I remember my manager telling me he was the first artist she had ever seen in person whose performance surpassed what was on the vinyl. Not being in the States to celebrate his career and life with other artists saddens me. However, due to technology and the vision of David Nathan, of Soulmusic.com I was able to join Dionne Warwick, The O’Jays, and others in paying tribute to our legendary Academy Award winner. J. PHOENIX MAKES IT TO VIBE: PRESS, PROMOTION & THE PEOPLE

Well Sort of……It’s not an article, but it’s a sho nuff start. Right there on page 40 of the August issue, “12 Essential Posthumous Tupac Songs,” at number 2 is Thugz Mansion featuring Nas and J. Phoenix.

It’s been an interesting two weeks since we last hooked up…….Since then I’ve picked up a legion of new online fans and some nice press regarding FOR THE PEOPLE and its national release to radio. Now for those of you who don’t know how the industry works, this doesn’t mean that you will be hearing me every hour on your local radio stations just yet. But what it does mean is that radio program directors and music directors have all now heard and heard about J. Phoenix. So if you feel like exerting your influence, feel free to call those request lines.

The Swelling Crowd…..It’s more than I could have imagined, especially since I have been doing all of my singing across the ocean. I guess this is a true example of “if you build it they will come.” I now have more than 200,000 online friends and fans and an online Street Team of 200 in 30 states and the United Kingdom. It's Official.......After creating hits across genres for other folks, I'm coming out swinging on my own on July 29th with a national radio promotion for my first single, “For The People,” to mark the "official" release MASTERPIECE.

Since you're an insider, you already know “For The People,” is produced by The Heatmakerz, the phenomenal Hip-Hop team known for their work with Cannibus Cam’ron, Lil Flip, and Lil Wayne. What you may not know is that it has recently enjoyed more than 7,000 plays online....thank you very much....and is called “a winner and real crowd pleaser with good melodies and a great message” by the A&R team at Taximusic.com.

In case you haven't noticed, this song is all about getting ya'll back to happy, and reminding you that regardless of how the world is changing our souls never die. Ultimately, for me, music is about healing and that's always my goal.

Now I'm not bragging, but I'm justing putting it out there that folks have been saying I'm like Jill Scott for my vibe, Anthony Hamilton for my soulful delivery, Eric Benet for my vibrato, Seal for my diversity, and Avant for my lyrical approach to romance. And I'm cool with that.

The Making of Masterpiece.....This was a fantastic journey. I was inspired by such classic

soul artists as Marvin Gaye, Curtis Mayfield and Bill Withers. Like these poets, I'm addressing what's really going on from the power of individuals to make a difference (“Heart of a Solder”), to heartbreak (“Just Another Memory”) to the negative views often directed toward African-American men (“Just Like You” and “Maybe One Day”).

I'm incredibly proud of Masterpiece because it gave me the opportunity to tell my stories along with artists I consider great. There’s no trend on this album, it's about the vocals, the lyrics, great musicianship and strong production.

I co-executive produced Masterpiece with my long-time collaborator Gary Haase, known for his work with such artists as Celine Dion, Chaka Khan, Randy Brecker and Michael Bolton. In addition to Gary and the Heatmakerz, Masterpiece features the work of Los Angeles R&B hitmaker, Kip “KP” Wilson, who handled the remix of Tupac’s “Mama’s Just A Little Girl,” Eric Codee who boasts a client list that includes Mary J. Blige, Neo and Marcus Miller, and title song producer, Bert Price, known for his work with R&B legends Blue Magic and contemporary artists such as Alicia Keys.

Other musicians on the album are American Idol tour guitarist Tim Stewart, who has performed with Jennifer Hudson, Mary Mary, Heather Headley and Omarion, and played on albums with Lionel Richie, Destiny's Child, Marvin Sapp, Mary J. Blige, Tamia, Tupac, Vickie Winans, and Rodney Jerkins; Alex Stiff, the accomplished producer, songwriter and guitarist with song placements on television and in advertising, who produced for Tupac’s Better Dayz album and was featured on Quincy Jones & Bill Cosby - The New Mixes, Vol. I.; violinist Angeliqua "Gailybird" Cowart and bassist “Phat” Albert Parker, both members of the alternative hip hop band 4^th Avenue Jones; and Chris Taylor, who has worked with Celine Dion, Grover Washington, Jr., and Randy Brecker.

Silverback, Grizzly and All That Jazz

Back To The Music…..I’ve been so caught up in the environment, I haven’t spoken to you about the music. Trust me, in addition to the performances music is on my mind on a regular. Even when I’m climbing the steps of ancient ruins, I’m working on a melody. I just started two new shows, Jazz Set and Summer Breeze, and I’m hyped because I'm singing with the fabulous Shevon Jacobs and this sister can wail!!.....just the two of us lightin’ up the stage.

Folks Are Recognizin’…..Last week a family, who recognized me from the show, approached and went into shock when they learned that I'd never been to music school or taken vocal lessons. You know a brother took that opportunity to direct them right to the gift shop to pick up Masterpiece.

Where In The World Is J. Phoenix…….Well, last week I made a trek over to the zoo in Barcelona where I came eye-to-eye with a silverback gorilla….he was HUGE....and a grizzly bear, also massive. As you can see I’ve got a little photo skills. I’m an animal lover so it was great to also see a rhino and chimps almost in their natural habitat…..I hear it’s not that hot in New York, but I was burning up while hitting the markets in Croatia and Nice….I got to see siesta in full effect when I hit Pisa. It was truly a ghost town around noon….While stopping in a local grocery store in Villefranche, I realized how much we have to choose from in the U.S. and how much we still want more. They only have six cereals to choose from. If this sounds like a lot, check out the cereal aisle the next time you’re in Pioneer, Associated or one of them joints…..Just left Kusadasi, Turkey, and by the time you read this I’ll be chillin’ in Santorini, Greece.

REAL PIZZA, REAL HISTORY& OTHER MASTERPIECES

Real Pizza, Real History…..Coming from New York City I thought I was the pizza connoisseur. Not so, at least not until now. In my recent travels through Italy I have learned the truth…outstanding crust and fresh tomatoes; and like in New York, it’s available everywhere……On another note, rolling over here has made me realize that the U.S. is seriously in its infancy. Hanging in Greece and Italy around the Parthenon (built in the 5th century BC) and the Coliseum (construction started between 70 and 72 AD) really put things in perspective. Between performances I also had the opportunity to visit some “younger” landmarks, among them The Monument of Four Moors, which spoke to me loudly, The National Museum of Rome and the unfinished church, Sagrada Familia, in Barcelona, Spain. Did I mention the heat? It must have had me trippin’ because I ventured to hike to the top of the Parthenon….the view is captivating…..in 90 degree weather. Even dogs were seeking shade along the way.

What’s Up With Me & Masterpiece…….Well music writers and A&R folks are comparing me to Anthony Hamilton, Jill Scott, Eric Benet, and Avant, so I’m good, considering there’s no major label and the budget is shoe string. My management is genius! At the end of last week I was sitting at #63 on the Top 100 New York Neosoul Artists chart at Myspace, #49 on the Top 100 Pop Artist chart at Reverbnation, at Indie-Music “Hate to Love You” was #10 on the R&B chart, and at the top of the month I was an “Editor’s Pick”. Just heard Masterpiece is now available online at Target and will soon be available through the predominant mobile phone company in Japan. So, like I said, I’m feeling good.

IT’S ALL ABOUT THE MUSIC

Music on the fly…Yep, it’s all about the music and I’ve been spending quality time hooking up Pro Tools and working on some new songs. I have the perfect song for Mario. It’s Black Music Month……And I’m Celebrating! Here’s a little walk through where some of my songs live.

Where In The World Is J. Phoenix…….At the end of last week I was in Venice. All I can say is WOW!

Then I hit Tunisia. Yes, Tunisia. Looks like I got here just in time since I hear gasoline back home is now $4.29 a gallon for regular. I’m scared to ask what’s going on with the diesel people. Anyway, so I’m posted up on top of this camel thinking all twisted: Are you crazy? Wrong move and it’s a done with. Then: I’m a man! This ain’t nothin’ compared to navigating the streets of New York City. To finally: Relax and enjoy what may possibly be a once in a lifetime opportunity. At the top of this week I performed in Barcelona and Florence and by the time you read this post I’ll be in Rome.

THEY HOLLERED WHEN THEY HEARD ME

WOW!!!……While I live for the thrill of travel and performing on foreign soil, I wish I had been home Tuesday when Barack Obama put another page in the history books. Studying history is one thing, but living it is a whole other story.

Singing & Swinging……Well, I got what I asked for. The audience loved Big Time Swing. Long story short, the response was off the meter. Not just an ovation, but a standing one. I started off the show in the shadows doing a bass line Acappella scat which leads right into an ensemble number. Then all tuxed and Zootsuited-up I got my singing all the way on with “Jump Jive & Wail,” "Birth of the Blues," “Chattanooga Choo Choo,” and “Down With Love”. Hold up, a brother has joined the ranks of Michael Jackson, Chris Brown and Usher with the dance moves, props and all; and even flexed my acting muscle in a piece called “Competition,” a recreation of a dance competition from Glen Island Casino in the old days of New Rochelle, New York. By the time the closing number, “It Don’t Mean A Thing (If It Ain’t Got That Swing),” was in full effect, the audience was on its feet. I am definitely feeling the love on and off stage.

Where In The World Is J. Phoenix…….Since Thursday I’ve been in Barcelona, Cannes
Florence, Rome, and Naples; and by the time you read this post I’ll be in Venice.

What’s Up With Masterpiece…….At last check on Friday things were looking good with two songs on the Indie Music R&B Top 100 Chart. “Money Don’t Mean A Thing” moved up to #43 from #98 the previous week, and Hate To Love You was at #16. At Reverbnation I was holding it down as the #29 pop artist, out of 6082, ahead of Justin Timberlake, Maroon 5, The Pussycat Dolls, Kate Voegle, Madonna, and Natasha Bedingfield. Over at MySpace’s Top 100 New York NeoSoul artists things were looking good at #41.

A SATURDAY NIGHT FEVER

Saturday Night Was Sizzling!.........a packed house in Portugal and two standing ovations for the first show, “Tango Buenos Aires”. Your boy had his Spanish and choreography tight! The show was hot and so was the after party. All that heat and fun were soon over. The next morning it was right back to the grind, getting ready for the “Big Time Swing” performance. I’m really looking forward to the audience response to my interpretation of such legenadary songs as “Orange Colored Sky”(popularized by Nat King Cole), and “One For My Baby” (popularized by Frank Sinatra). (So here I am Chillin' after Rehearsal and ready to hit the stage.

Tuesday Was Touchy…......Your boy barely missed running into some equipment during a tech run. I’ll tell you, these big productions are way different from standing in front of a mic in a local club. I had to get my head together, and what better place to do it than Villafrance, about a 5 minute train ride from Monte Carlo & Nice. In case you haven’t heard, the Euro is no joke; but after walking the steep stairs of this colorful town, I managed to grab a great meal at a local spot.

Where In The World Is J. Phoenix…….I just finished up the weekend in Lisbon (Portugal) and Tangier (Morocco), Tuesday in France, Wednesday just chillin’, and by the time you read this I’ll be in Barcelona.

WHERE IN THE WORLD IS J. PHOENIX?

I’m a long way from home…..After the hustle and bustle of preparing to travel, eight long hours on a flight to London, and the loss of several hours due to a time change I finally rested my head at 6:00 a.m. Then it was up at nine to Big Ben, Trafalgar Square, HMV, some music stores, of course, and the local scene, where I ran into a group of breakdancers doing their thing for money. Hip Hop is truly worldwide! Monday was a two-hour trek to Southampton, Tuesday I arrived in Le Havre, France and by the time you read this I’ll be in Vigo, Spain. Stay with me ya’ll.

SHOW TIME, FLIGHT TIME & FAMILY TIME

It’s crazy ya’ll…..I’m singing in Spanish and getting my dance on for this European tour. While I’m still in the heat of the Miami sun it’s not all fun and games. Everyday I’m doing performance stuff, and I’m gonna be honest with you, this choreography is kickin’ a brother. Singing and dancing at the same time ain’t no joke. On Sunday I’ll jump on a flight headed for London and then a two-hour drive to Southampton. Then it’s on!

Through it all I took some family time and attended the wedding of my childhood buddy Lydell, who tied the knot with his love Zarifa last weekend. It was great to step out of the performer role and spend some good old school time with those who see me as a good friend first and a recording artist second.

Holla If You Heard Me……During the 4^th quarter of 2007 my songs were featured on local TV, cable TV, radio and the Internet.

What’s Up With Me & Masterpiece…..Well, I’m still holding it down at Reverbnation as the #71 Pop Artist out of 5,791. “Just Another Memory” is easing its way to the R&B Top 20 at Ourstage and “Sweet Freedom is in the Pop Top 40. “Hate To Love You” is still in the Top 20 on the R&B Chart at Indie Music, while “Money Don’t Mean A Thing” jumped up 14 spots since last week; and I’m rated as one of the Top 100 New York Neo Soul artists at Myspace. Brooklyn is in the house and stayin’.

FLYING THROUGH UP UNTIL RIGHT NOW

I am now chillin’ in Miami…and still grinnin’ about the great review on SoulTracks… after 3 hectic months in NY

Kicked off the early part of the year giving back. At the top of February I spent some time mentoring young men at Harlem's Abyssinian Baptist Church for the first leg of the Tied To Greatness™ tour. This is a national outreach program focused on self-image improvement efforts, targeting at-risk, inner city high school males. At the end of the month I headed over to Brooklyn to discuss the art and business of songwriting with high school students attending the annual Career Day, hosted by the Black Alumni of Pratt Institute (BAP). BAP was founded in 1990 to identify and advance scholastic and professional opportunities for Pratt Institute students and alumni of African and Latino descent. Each year four pre-college summer scholarships are awarded. I believe in our young people and what they can do when we put in work.

Then I stepped back in the studio with The Heatmakerz, and I believe you’ll be pleased when the songs hit the streets. Also in session with Mic El, a young producer making noise, keep your eyes on him, and Sincere of the Product G&B, that unforgettable voice of “Maria Maria” fame.

Management had me tied to the seat signing contracts and submitting songs for recording and film & TV placement. Got great feedback and hanging in some high places….will keep you posted.

Later this month I’m heading overseas for a headlining performance aboard Royal Caribbean’s Brilliance of the Seas. I’ll holla at ya from Italy, France, Greece, Tunisia, Spain, Portugal and a few other hot spots.

What’s Up With The Album………Masterpiece is holding it’s own and making fans worldwide. I’m happy to say that album sales and song downloads are taking place close to home and as far away as IL, CA, VA, TX, MN, OH, CO, Japan, London, France, Italy and Germany…….and the fan base is building all over the map, from Las Vegas to South Carolina, Louisiana to New Hampshire and Toronto to Norway.
